The Massachusetts Information Technology Center

The Challenge

The Massachusetts Information Technology Center (MITC) was developed by Lincoln Property Company and opened in November 1995. The 425,000 square foot building serves as a data center/office building for five Commonwealth of Massachusetts user agencies. There are six Data Centers that encompass approximately 44,100 SF. Each Data Center has an 18-inch computer room type raised floor, FM 200 fire suppression system in addition to a Double-Interlock Pre-Action Sprinkler System. These Data Centers are served by (2) two 2,500 Kva sub stations. They are also backed up by (3) 2,000 Kva generators set-up in an N+1 configuration. In addition, there are (2) 2,250 Kva Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems configured as an A&B distribution including an N+1 module. The Data Center cooling is provided via (3) 450 ton - water-cooled chillers configured as N+1. LPC's primary goal for MITC has been and continues to be to operate the MITC facility at a level designed to be both economical for the Commonwealth and without jeopardizing the N+1 Operating Configuration of the original "mission critical" design of the Data Center. It is this N+1 Operating Configuration that provides the triple redundancy MITC operates within.

Our Strategy:

By employing highly trained individuals experienced in Data Center operations and providing them with in-house training on the specialized equipment, Lincoln can ensure the property is properly maintained to the standards of a first class Data Center. Obviously, outside vendors play a role in supporting the Data Centers, but it is the on-site engineering team who maintain the operating environment 24 hours a day and who monitors critical systems for any disturbances and ascertains appropriate and immediate resolution.

The Results:

We are proud of the fact that over the last nine years MITC Data Centers have experienced NO DOWN TIME! This feat of no unplanned outages for nearly nine years places MITC and her staff among the elite; MITC is operating among the top 10% of all Data Centers in the Country according to the two leading industry authorities; "The Uptime Institute" and the "24X7 Exchange".
